Voice of the Wood

Voice of the Wood is a play for family and young audiences adapted from Claude Clement's exquisite children's book by the same name. The play utilizies masks, costumes, live music, a recorded sound- scape and a 15' x 6' book/set with giant pages that actually turn as the story progresses. Renowned director/mask artist Robert Faust, and Grammy Award-winning composer/cellist Eugene Friesen are the creators and performers of this work, commissioned by the Los Angeles Music Center.

Image At the heart of this duo performance is a luthier, a maker of musical instruments, who crafts his masterpiece cello from the wood of an ancient tree in his yard. On the night of the Grand Carnival, he challenges the musicians of Venice to make his cello sing. A proud and famous cellist comes forward but produces only cacophony on the magical instrument. After a long agonizing night, the cellist abandons his mask of arrogance and succeeds in unlocking the true voice of the wood.

In its initial run in Los Angeles, Voice of the Wood elicited both laughter and tears, garnering enthusiastic praise from sponsors, parents, teachers, and children.
